Hudson's Best Cheap Eats: Casa Latina Pupusas Y Más

It’s pupusa time, people. If you’re unfamiliar with this traditional dish from El Salvador, prepare yourself for deliciousness. At Hudson’s Casa Latina Pupusas y Mas, these savory, circular patties are a bit like thick corn tortillas, stuffed with cheese, beans, chicharron, and/or whatever chef Maria Romero has on special for the day. Frida most definitely approves.

During our mid-summer visit, this colorful little space was also serving watermelon agua fresca, which Ramona declared her New Favorite Drink.

We’ll definitely be back for the soup and enchiladas, which looked incredible, but this time we filled up too quickly on the perfect pupusas, which were served with a little tangy fermented cabbage and a sweet-hot salsa.

We got some tacos on this visit, too, and we’re still dreaming about them. This is some serious Latin cooking—juicy, deeply flavorful meats, super fresh salsa verde, and the bite of chopped onions on homey handmade tortillas. Everything tastes like it’s made with love. And the tacos and pupusa only cost around $3 each. (Also worth noting—Casa Latina used to be cash-only, but they just started accepting credit cards last week!)

Casa Latina is completely kid-friendly, and I think the bright environment made our picky kids feel so at home that they couldn’t help but try a bunch of foods and drinks they never had before. Yes, yes, yes. Más, por favor.
