The MOST FUN Hotel in the Catskills!

The MOST FUN Hotel in the Catskills!

Imagine if the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular were a hotel room, and you didn’t have to go all the way to Disney to experience it. The Digs, a three-bedroom standalone cottage complete with an overhead boulder to greet you at the door, is one of many deliciously extravagant themed rooms at the Catskills’ own Roxbury Motel. Above, my son sits in a room that’s only accessible through an Easter Island-eque statue, with a murphy bed that pulls down to reveal a mural of a Mayan pyramid. All creature comforts considered, the room is also equipped with a fluffy white bathrobe it’s own flat-screen TV.

The Digs, a three-bedroom cottage for Indiana Jones aficionados, at the Roxbury Motel.

The original owners harnessed their Broadway background to design transportative spaces inspired by The Wizard of Oz, Star Trek, the kingdom of forest fairies, and more. Each room is like an immersive theater set, complete with intricate details and aptly dramatic lighting. We asked for Roxbury gift cards as holiday gifts and pooled together a bunch of them for a Catskills staycation at The Digs.

My favorite part was the glittery gold shower with a built-in fishtank (though my children refused to use it, as they didn’t want the fish to see them naked). The place is maximalist heaven. I loved the bathroom’s gaudy Egyptian-themed mirrors, the scarab medallions painted on the walls, and the brass swan-shaped faucets that gild the sinks.

In a hallway swathed in bookcase wallpaper, faux tomes poke out from the flat surface, and green bankers lamps glow from on high. It’s splendiferous. Brash. An exuberant work of art all set up for a sleepover.

A fedora is provided in a dark, leathery, masculine bedroom. Is it appropriate for me to post a portrait of a 10-year-old lounging beneath a canopy of whips? Eh, why not? Let’s go with it.

The front desk is styled like a Hobbit house. The lobby bathroom is the world’s grooviest.

Traveling with kids, I also appreciated the massive DVD and board game library in the lobby, and after some exploring, my kids dug up the Indiana Jones movies that were hidden in our own room.

Roxbury isn’t exactly a hotbed of nightlife, but we did walk over to a fun dinner at Chappie’s and picked up some snacks at the well-curated Good Grocer nextdoor. I recommend picking up some provisions before the shop closes. A very basic continental breakfast is provided at the hotel, but you’re there for the vibes, not the food.

While you’re in the area, you’ve got to take a short drive to Hobart Book Village. While you’re at it, pick up some insanely delicious barbecue at Solinsky’s Meats and pair it with some biscuits from Stamford Coffee. We’re hoping to make a return trip in the summer months and make some use of the local trails and the hotel pool.

If you’ve been, please tell us which room we should stay in next!

The Roxbury is located at 2258 County Highway 41. Roxbury, NY; (607) 326-7200.
