NOW CLOSED: Bittersweet Catskill: Rainbows on the Street, Woe in the Treats
NOTE: BITTERSWEET HAS CLOSED! WE MISS IT!
Anyone else looking to drown some sorrows in a big ol’ bowl of ice cream? Bittersweet Ice Cream, a colorful new storefront on Catskill’s ever-expanding Main Street proposes the Woebegone Sundae, a.k.a. brownie a la mode. I’ll take mine with Caramel Pretzel ice cream and garam masala pepitas, please.
This sliver of a shop is pumped with bright colors—orange walls, candy-colored lattice, polka dots backing every flavor, from classics like Rocky Road and Cookie Dough to more adventurous offerings, like Pomegranate Molasses, Fig, Damson Plum, Apricot-Orange Blossom, and Thai Coconut.
Jane’s Ice Cream provides the bold ice cream flavors, and all the ice cream is small-batch, hormone-free, and handcrafted locally in the Hudson Valley.
The space used to house the florist Pistil Whip Design, which Bittersweet’s owner, Michelle Williams, still runs. She makes gorgeous flower arrangements by day and then scoops ice cream by night, a double-shift sounds equal parts idyllic and exhausting.
Maybe that’s why Bittersweet’s sundae menu makes it seem like Rainbow Brite got a little emo in her teenage years and grew up to open a scoop shop.
But as far as our kids were concerned, there’s nothing to be sad about here at Bittersweet.
Bittersweet Catskill is located at 374 Main Street, Catskill, NY; 518-238-8123.
