Northern Catskills Calendar: 2017 Spring/Summer
TAP New York Craft Beer & Food Festival at Hunter Mountain. Saturday, April 29 from 2pm-6pm & Sunday, April 30 from 12pm-4pm. At New York's largest craft beer festival, the ticket price includes beer samples from an extremely long list of breweries as well as free food. This year's food theme is "hot dog creations from ball parks across the country." You must be 21 or older to attend, and also you must be really good at drinking beer.
Tours Reopen at Thomas Cole National Historic Site at 218 Spring Street in Catskill. May 2, 2017. If you want to see first-hand where the Hudson River School of landscape painting began (or just need to impress an artsy love interest), you'll want to check out Thomas Cole's beautiful 1800s home. Tours of the historic buildings and grounds will reopen for the warm-weather season, from May to October. May hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 10:30am-4pm.
Opening Night at the Greenville Drive-In at 10700 Rt. 32 in Greenville. May 6, 2017, 6:30pm. The annual kick-off party for the 2017 season involves "a screening of the iconic film Casablanca and an evening of music, food and beverages inspired by the movie and its North African location." We're talking live jazz standards, Moroccan snacks, and French 75 cocktails. Basically all my favorite things in one place.
Mother's Day Brunch Buffet and Farm Tour at Heather Ridge Farm at 989 Broome Center Road in Preston Hollow, NY. Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14, 2017. If you have the sort of mother who is interested in experiencing the finest brunch in the Catskills, followed by a muddy romp around a farm to look at some crazy-cute alpacas, then you must make a reservation here. The farm's cafe is open every Saturday and Sunday, year-round, from 11am to 3pm, and you can check out all their special events here.
The East Durham Irish Festival celebrates its 40th year this Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, 2017. Do you like Irish music? Do you like drinking beer? Do you like parties in tents? Yes, yes, yes? Then you will love the Irish Festival. When I was a kid, they would paint the streets with shamrocks leading up to the festival gates, and the party always seemed epic. Kids 14 and under get in for free, but as I recall, it's a pretty crazy scene and you might have more fun if you leave your toddlers with a sitter.
Mountain Jam is a 3-day music festival at Hunter Mountain that takes place June 16-18, 2017. This year's headliners include Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Steve Miller Band, and The String Cheese Incident. Though the festival's name suggests a patchouli-scented jam band extravaganza, there's a variety of acts on the bill, including some folk-leaning bands like Shovels & Rope and The Head And The Heart. (If you're more into country, head up to Hunter Mountain a week earlier for the Taste of Country Fest June 9-10.)
The Zoom Flume, East Durham's own water park, opens for the season on June 17-18, 2017. It'll be closed for school groups June 19-22 (whoa, rad field trip!) and then open daily June 23-September 4. I haven't been since I was a kid, but I'm planning on taking my own kids this year. Currently seeking a heavy-duty rash guard and a sturdy swimsuit that won't give me wedgies.
Catskills Irish Arts Week in East Durham spans from July 9-16, 2017. After watching the documentary The Irish Catskills: Dancing at the Crossroads, my son Archer and I have become obsessed with this celebration of Irish song and dance. As the more level-headed sibling to the Irish Festival listed above, Irish Arts week brings concerts, lectures, a family-friendly barn dance, and a wide array of workshops, covering everything from fiddle lessons to Irish language lessons to Irish knitting lessons, each taught by experts in their field, many of whom fly in from Ireland for the occasion.
This year's Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival happens at Walsh Farm in Oak hill on July 13-16, 2017. Featuring bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Grey Fox promises a solid bluegrass lineup, plus daily activities like yoga and meditation, and even a bluegrass music camp for kids. The giant fest draws 4,000 campers (plus many more day-ticket holders), and we posted some pretty amazing aerial photos of the gigantic event last summer.
This year, Meltasia will be held at East Durham's Blackthorne Resort from September 8-10, 2017. Last year, the music fest was held on the grounds of the old Catskill Game Farm, with some bands actually performing in the abandoned cages. Performers have yet to be announced. Psychedelic adventures guaranteed. Leave the kids at home.
What are we missing here? If you've got an event coming up in the area, please share the info in the comments.
