Local Turkeys for Thanksgiving in the Catskills

Local Turkeys for Thanksgiving in the Catskills

The best Thanksgiving turkey is a local turkey. You guys know how much I love Hannaford, but when it comes to this family feast, I'd rather show some gratitude to a hardworking local farmer by buying a local bird. Here are some local farms with turkeys still available. I'd love to expand this turkey-buying guide, so if you know about another Catskills farm with Thanksgiving turkeys available, please let us know in the comments.

EAST DURHAM. East Durham Farms: "We have about 30 pasture-raised, fresh, unfrozen turkeys," says our favorite neighborhood farmer, Chris Brannigan. The turkeys are priced at $5.50 per pound, and they will be available for pick-up the afternoon of Saturday, November 18. You can reach them by phone at 518-239-4657 or email eastdurhamfarms[at]gmail.com.

PRESTON HOLLOW. Heather Ridge Farm: This absolutely beautiful Preston Hollow farm still has a few turkeys available, along with gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and more prepared by Chef Rob Handel from the farm's own Bee's Knees Cafe. Farmer Carol Clement says, "Ours are raised on pasture, fed locally-grown grain, truly free-range, and forage for all the grass, bugs and worms they want! The birds will range from 15-25 pounds most years, and we try to match the perfect bird to your size request.  $5.90/pound. A small deposit will reserve your bird. We do sell out!" Reserve now and pick up your cleaned, ready-to-roast birds November 18 and 19. They come with roasting-time instructions! Download their turkey order form here.

COXSACKIE. Mansion + Reed: You can reserve pasture-raised turkeys as well as fresh pies from this charming Coxsackie general store. Their turkeys, which are pastured-raised on 100% vegetarian, non-GMO feed, are sourced from small farms in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York via Red Gate Grocer. Turkeys are priced at $5.33 per pound, and the order-ahead deadline is November 12, 2017. They've also got organic Pumpkin, Pecan, Apple-Raspberry Crumble, and Double-Crust Apple pies from Bread Alone Bakery, priced at $17.95 per pie. To place an order, stop by the shop, give them a call at 518-616-9701, or send a Facebook message.

TIVOLI. Northwind Farms: This Tivoli farm offers pasture-raised, antibiotic-free, hormone-free poultry, turkeys. Their traditional New Holland white and Heritage Bronze turkeys are available both fresh and frozen depending upon size. Fresh turkeys will weigh in at 20 pounds or more. A deposit of $25 per turkey must be submitted by November 11, 2017 in order to reserve a bird. To get in touch, call them at 845-757-5591, email northwindfarms[at]citlink.net, or message them via their Facebook page.

WEST CARLTON. West Wind Acres: Our friends at Reed Street Bottle Shop recommend the high-quality meat at this farm up in West Carlton, NY. Their turkeys are pasture-raised, fed non-GMO grains, and cost $7 per pound.
