Upstate Stock: Where Brooklyn Meets the Catskills

Upstate Stock: Where Brooklyn Meets the Catskills

A tender succulent in a masculine, sharp-edged, concrete pot. It reminded me of you, honey.

Upstate Stock is many things: a sun-drenched coffee-shop, an urban-rustic menswear purveyor, an importer of design-conscious products from the Catskills. If you're shopping for the man in your life who can build a campfire and also choose the perfect modern bungalow on Airbnb, look no further.

The store and cafe is located in Brooklyn (at 2 Berry Street, across from McCarren Park), and they sell American-made goods, many of which are produced in the Catskills. They've got everything from grooming products to knit gloves and caps to perfect crew-neck sweatshirts to bottles of maple syrup redolent of wood-smoke. It's heaven for the woodsy-yet-fashionable Brooklyn dweller.

Our upstate wilderness-man friends -- the kind of guys who live in t-shirts from their favorite local bars and remove their well-worn work boots at your doorstep to reveal a pair of mismatched ankle socks -- might not be on the market for a tiny succulent in a triangular concrete planter, but we'd love to take our Catskills readers on a photo tour of this Brooklyn spot.

Empire Apothecary's Standard Issue made-in-Brooklyn hair paste makes a fine stocking stuffer for a well-groomed outdoorsman.

Upstate Stock's own Albany Black Spruce Solid Cologne, so you can always smell like Christmas.

Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. bandanas and cards that are masculine enough for dudes to give and receive.

A huge selection of Sallye Ander soaps in brown paper packages. I bought the peppermint-scented Candy Cane Soap for my mom, who was babysitting my kids while I shopped. (Hi, Mom!)

Each Sallye Ander soap scent has it's own design. The Candy Cane variety is gorgeously marbled with with red and green swirls. Perfect host or hostess gift!

Upstate Stock uses Red & Brown's Campfire Syrup™ in their signature Campfire lattes. I don't know what kind of black magic is involved in smoking maple syrup, but it really smells like a campfire in a bottle. I've been putting it in my morning coffee and the aroma brings me back right back to campfires on our hill upstate.

Hudson Standard Bitters, with flavors like Spruce Shoot ("boldy woodsy"), Love-Struck ("inspired by an ancient Roman aphrodisiac made from hyssop, thyme, peppercorn and ginger"), and Celery ("Not just for Bloody Marys!"), make a fine gift for a cocktail enthusiast with an already well-stocked bar.

Bad Seed Chili Granola: Meet granola's evil twin. Seriously, guys, what will they think of next?

I love the clean, simple, unembellished menswear here. Pete didn't understand why the sweatshirts cost over $100. Um, maybe because Upstate Stock values high-quality American manufacturing and this isn't Old Navy, dude!
